What Is A Dog As A Species?
Genetic studies show that dogs evolved from wolves. Even in the most changeable mitochondrial DNA markers (DNA handed down on the female's side), dogs and wolves differ by not much more than one percent. (The Evolution Of Dogs, National Geographic 2002) "Canis Familiaris" (the scientific name for the domesticated dog) was probably domesticated from the wolf 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.
Natural Diet
A "Natural diet" is a scientific term meaning the diet the species eats in the wild during abundant habitat and food supply. In other words, just because the neighbors dog raids your trash can doesn't mean it should live on a diet of happy meals, potato chips, and pizza.
Optimal Health In The Canine
In order to move closer to optimal health in our dogs, I believe we must begin by feeding the species appropriate diet. Until we eliminate diet as the potential precursor to disease it is dificult to determine the disease's true origin.
